New Dance Classes with Liz Nania – Swing and Salsa

Liz Nania at OUT to Dance starts 8-week beginner classes in West Roxbury on Monday, Jan. 25.  No partner or experience needed.  Liz makes dancing fun and easy, even if you think you have two left feet! Rockin' Swing (7-8pm). The most fun and useful dance around.  Learn smooth leading and following and the most important spins. Salsa and Merengue (8-9).

This is the new home of what was formerly the Kings Open Mic. Every Sunday, you can see some of the city’s best comedians, musicians, poets, sketch performers, and more. If you’re interested in performing at the mic, it’s super easy. Just arrive, put your name on a slip of paper in a beer pitcher, and next thing you know you’ll be onstage! Sets are 5 minutes or 2 songs, depending on what you do.

We’ll begin the day with a tour of the beautiful garden at Old Farm in Wenham, designed by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman in 1912. The Colonial Revival-style garden with rectangular garden beds and gravel walks is compatible with this old New England farmhouse, whose oldest parts date to 1659. The garden features daffodils, peonies, iris, phlox, and many native asters.

The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery for African and African American Art presents a weekly series of films that demonstrating the music’s widespread and deep influence, as part of its ongoing exhibition “Art of Jazz: Form/Performance/Notes.”   The nine films featured include performances by legendary artists such as Billie Holiday, Thelonius Monk, and the Count Basie Orchestra, documentaries including Mingus: Charlie Mingus, which follows the bassist as he is forcibly evicted from his New York City apartment, and features including Bird.
